Stablecoins in Online Gambling: USDT, USDC, and DAI Compared

What is a stablecoin and how does it relate to gambling.

A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency that is designed to maintain a fixed price, usually 1 USD. USDT is the most common. It is issued by Tether. USDC is issued by Circle. DAI is issued through a decentralized system.

For gambling, a stablecoin is useful because you can deposit it directly from your wallet without the volatility risk of Bitcoin or Ethereum.

Q. What is the difference between USDT and USDC from a player's perspective.

A. They are nearly identical. Both are worth approximately 1 USD at all times. Both can be transferred quickly on-chain. USDC is arguably more trustworthy because Circle is regulated in the US. Tether operates in more of a gray area. For most gambling purposes, this distinction is not material.

Q. Why would a player care about which stablecoin they use.

A. Different casinos accept different stablecoins. Some accept only USDT. Some accept USDC and USDT. Some accept all three including DAI. The player should use whichever is accepted by their casino of choice.

Q. What is DAI and how is it different from USDT.

A. DAI is a stablecoin created through a decentralized system rather than by a corporation. It is backed by cryptocurrency collateral rather than reserves of actual USD. In theory, DAI is more trustworthy because it is decentralized. In practice, DAI has experienced depegging events where it traded below 1 USD.

For gambling, DAI is less liquid than USDT or USDC. This means fewer casinos accept it and fewer exchanges will convert it back to fiat.

Q. Is there a risk to using stablecoins for gambling.

A. Yes. If the stablecoin depeg (loses its 1 USD peg), your balance becomes worth less. USDC has never depegged. USDT has come close once. DAI has depegged multiple times.

There is also counterparty risk. If Tether fails, USDT tokens may become worthless. This risk is low but nonzero.

Q. How does a player mitigate this risk.

A. Keep your balance in stablecoins only for the period you intend to gamble. Deposit, play, and withdraw to actual cryptocurrency or fiat as soon as you are done. Do not leave a balance sitting in a stablecoin for months.

Also, use USDC in preference to USDT if the casino accepts both, because Circle is more regulated.

Q. What about the conversion between stablecoins.

A. All three stablecoins can be converted to each other on major exchanges like Coinbase or Kraken. The conversion is nearly instant and costs less than 1 cent for typical amounts. A player can deposit USDT and withdraw USDC without significant friction.

Q. Is gambling with stablecoins better or worse than gambling with fiat currency.

A. Stablecoins offer one advantage: immediate withdrawal. A casino withdrawal of USD usually takes 1 to 3 business days. A stablecoin withdrawal is final in minutes. Everything else is worse. The user experience is more complex, the exchanges are less regulated, and the counterparty risk exists.

A player should use stablecoins only if the convenience of withdrawal speed outweighs the added complexity.
